Quaggas
BY: Amanda

The last Quagga, equs quagga, disappeared from this earth when the last quagga, a mare, died on August 12th at the Amsterdam Zoo in 1883.  The quaggas had already disappeared from the wild in the 1870's.  They lived in the deserts of Africa, until people started hunting Quagga them and their population declined rapidly.

Quaggas were brownish with a hint of yellow, with stripes on their shoulders, head, and neck.  Quaggas were very social animals.  They were very closely related to horses and zebras of today.  Quaggas were herbivores.  They ate mainly grasses.  They were fast runners and had long legs.
