Genghis
Khan
And His Relatives
By Trevor
Genghis
Khan was born near the Ohron River in Mongolia in about 1162. His
real name was Temujin. His father was a minor Mongol tribe
chieftain. During the early part of his life, he conquered
neighboring t ribes. When he was about 45, he called a council
and declared himself leader of the Mongols. Everyone followed him
because he was a mastermind.
In 1206, he began the invasion on China.
In 1215, Genghis controlled all of China north of the Yellow
River. Whenever he and his army of Mongol and Turkish horsemen,
infantrymen, artillerymen, and spies took a city, they would take the
booty, technicians, and craftsmen. Then they would kill everyone
else. In 1219, Genghis and his army took the land that is now Iran,
Afghanistan, the Turkish part of Russia, and some of northern India.
In 1222, he conquered Caucasus and Southern Russia. When Genghis Khan
died in 1227, his empire was split up between his relatives.
Genghis Khan's son Ogadai took more
of Northern China in 1234. In 1241 Ogadai Khan died. Many of
his relatives such as Jagatai his brother, Butu, Hulagu, Mangu, and Kublai
his nephews later took Persia, Iraq, Hungary, and Poland. Most of
them fought like Genghis did. Genghis and his relatives took the
most land ever in history.
