 Potlatches
The word potlatch means to give. Northwest Coast Indians sometimes still have Potlatches. A long time ago they weren't allowed to have Potlatches because the government wouldn't let them. It was also hard to put on a Potlatch because they didn't have money then. It's easier for them to have a potlatch now because it doesn't take as much money as it did before.

All clans have potlatches. At potlatches people sing, dance, feast, tell stories, and sometimes are healing from grief. In certain clans, you can only sing certain songs. Most Potlatches now take place in the fall. Some can also go on for even four days. When natives dance at potlatches, they will sometimes wear button blankets.

Coastal Indians usually have potlatches if someone has died in the clan or if a totem pole is raised. When a person dies, other members of the clan will put regalia (Re-Ga-lIa) on them. They will also have a raven dancer for the raven clan. The raven dancer wears a mask made of cedar bark and wings that are also made of cedar bark. He dances around while other people dance with him and someone else plays the drum(s).
