Objective: Students will demonstrate good sportsmanship and teamwork while competing in a relay. They will also practice coordination skills as they crawl while imitating bears.
Materials needed:
4 empty gallon milk jugs
blue, green , yellow, and red spray paint
4 tennis balls painted blue, green, yellow, and red
Paint each jug one of the colors selected. Paint a corresponding tennis ball to go with each jug.
Directions: Divide students into 4 groups. Give each group one of the following names: Black Bears, Panda Bears, Polar Bears, and Brown Bears. Have students form a line in each group. Place one tennis ball in front of each line of students. Place all four jugs in the middle of the room or field.
When a whistle is blown, the first student in each group will place the ball under his/her chin while crawling on all fours to his/her designated jug in the middle of the field. As he/she reaches the jug, the ball must be dropped into the team's jug without using hands. After the ball has been successfully placed into the team's jug, the student must retrieve the ball, place it under his/her chin, and crawl back to his/her team where the next person in line will repeat the same pattern. The team whose members complete the pattern first is declared the winner.
