Text Box: Clothes

At the time of the bear hunt in 1902, most of the clothes people wore were made by the family mom.  Soon they were sewn and made by designers, though by the end of this decade almost everyone was buying ready-made clothes.  The kinds of clothes that a woman would wear were usually skirts that came down to the ground, even if she was doing "unladylike" things such as farming or bicycling.
Another thing that they wore were high, buttoned shoes, always with stockings. Another popular type of clothes for a woman was whale bone corsets and hats with festive plumage, fur, ribbons and other decorations.
The men's suits were almost always dark and heavy.  In the summer out in the country, a man might wear white flannel, but back then there was no such thing as a "summer weight suit."  The shirts had high collars and detachable cuffs for easier washing.  Almost every man wore a hat.  Farmers wore straw hats, rich people wore silky soft fabric hats, and other people wore just regular hats made of straw.
Catalogs of that time, particularly the Sears & Roebuck Catalog, show boys' clothes stockings.  They also had many different types of boys' shoes like long boots, short boots, and sometimes even tap shoes.
Doll dresses were sometimes made of fine silk or other fine materials.  They would have beautiful, colorful, soft ribbons.  Back then, doll dresses were very valuable and cost more than they do relative to today.
Today our clothes are very different.  For one thing, almost all of our clothes are machine made.  We will knit sometimes, but mostly we buy clothes from stores.  The fabrics, in particular, are different from 1902.  We have many synthetic or manmade fabrics today.  They are not made of natural fibers like cotton and silk.  They usually do not wrinkle and wear better and longer.
Women today wear few hats and stockings, usually only when dressing up or working in an office.  Women may wear high heels, but they also wear tennis shoes and flip flops! Women also wear pants, shorts, dresses, skirts, skorts, and other things.  And women don't wear things like whale bone corsets anymore!
Today in men's clothes we have different types of pants and t-shirts. Now a days we have leather pants. Also we have church pants for church and silky pants. In t-shirts there are tank tops, long sleeves,  silky, and leather. In kids clothes there are silky pants, silky shorts, and silky t-shirts. We also wear tank tops, short sleeve t-shirts, and pants that can zip and unzip.
