During the year 1200 bc., the Mycenaean's attacked the city of Troy which was a famous city for trading  in Asia Minor. During the start of the war, the Trojans controlled the trade routes to the Black Sea. The Trojans taxed every ship that came through that carried grain and/or gold. This was the Trojan's  way of  making money. Close to 500 years after Troy was attacked, a blind greek poet by the name of Homer    (hό' muhr) composed a long poem about the event. The poem about the Trojan War was called the Iliad. He also wrote a poem called the Odyssey which was about Odysseus (Ó dis' é uhs), a Mycenaean hero of the Trojan War. Homer gained all of his knowledge about these poems from resources like songs and legends that have been passed down by word of mouth. After he got that information, he added some descriptions that he had experienced from his everyday life. From what Homer stated in his poem the Iliad, the Trojan War was fought over a woman. The king of Tory, had a son named Paris. Paris fell in love with the King's wife names Helen. Paris then took Helen into the city of Troy when Helen's husband got mad. The king formed an army to sail over to the city of  Troy to get his wife back. When the king and his army arrived, they found out that the walls of Troy were so big, that they had to camp outside of the walls. The Trojan War lasted for ten years and the Mycenaean's have yet to take over the city of Troy. Then Odysseys, came up with the suggestion to take over control of the city. He made the soldiers of Mycenaean's build a huge wooden horse that was hallow inside. The best soldiers hid inside of the wooden horse at night while the rest packed up and went back to sail. The Trojans ties huge ropes to the wooden horse and pulled it into the city as a victory prize. When the city of Troy fell asleep, the Mycenaean soldiers came out from inside of the horse and attacked. They opened the city's gates to let the rest of the soldiers in. That was the story of the Trojan War.
