Did you know the captain of the Titanic was a man named Edward John Smith? He graduated from Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland. Captain Smith had captained 17 White Star Liners. One of the ships he captained was Titanic's sister ship, the Olympic. The Olympic cost $7 million to build. When Captain Smith was commanding the ship it got in a crash with another ship. You're probably wondering how old the captain was when he captained the Titanic, he was 62. The captain was trying to bring the hundreds of people to New York aboard the Titanic. Captain Smith realized the Titanic was sinking within 20 minutes of hitting the iceberg. Edward was waiting on the bridge for the women and children to get off the ship. Men were told to get off after the children and women got off. Captain Smith stayed on the sinking Titanic and died along with his ship. His body was never found. |
