Basketball is a fun, active sport for all. Often we may ask ourselves, just how did it start? In this part of our website, you will learn a complete summary of the history of this fascinating and well-liked sport.
Basketball was invented in 1891, in Springfield, Massachusetts, by a clever man named James Naismith. Mr. Naismith was born on November 6, 1861 in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. When he first invented basketball, he used a soccer ball in place of the basketball. For the basket, he used a peach basket. He eventually cut out the bottom of the basket. Today, we use a rubber ball and a netted hoop basket. Mr. Naismith originally had 13 basic rules. Today, there are many more.
Basketball became more and more popular. Naismaith was excited to see his sport become an Olympic event at the 1936 games held in Berlin, Germany. The National Basketball Association (NBA) was formed in 1946, making basketball even more well-liked. Even though his game was terrific, it never brought him fame nor fortune during his lifetime. But, today, he is not plain famous, but extremely famous! Without him, we wouldn't have stars such as Shaquille O'neal, Tereasa Weatherspoon, Kobe Bryant, or Cynthia Cooper (just to name a few!).
Yes, it's very hard to imagine a world without basketball. You know why this sport is good? It's because it gives a person some enjoyment. It's simple. It's fun. You don't need to be an excellent player to be able to play basketball. All you need is practice and effort. It's not as frustrating as it looks, and it's not complicated. So, to conclude the history, we will leave it up to you. If people, such as yourself, continue to play this game, then it will continue to be the huge success it already is. If not, it will just disappear. Lost....and gone forever. So, think "Basketball!"
