Robert I, the Bruce (1274-1329)
was one of Scotland's greatest heroes. He was one of the principal
leaders in the wars of William Wallace. He was named king of Scotland
at the age of 21. He organized many of the army strategies for Scotland.
After Wallace's execution in 1305,
Bruce decided to take charge and lead the fight for Scotland. Even
so, Edward I, the king of England, brought
his army and defeated Bruce at the Battle of Methyen. Two of Bruce's
brothers were killed in 1305, and Bruce went into hiding. In 1306
he came out of hiding and gathered an army to fight against English
invaders. They won many of their encounters. On June 24, 1314, Robert
the Bruce was more effective in his battles than England now run
by Edward II, and ended up beating them.
He continued to have more successes until his death in 1329.
