John de Warenne was born in 1231 and died in September 1304. He was a strong supporter of Edward I during the Barons' Wars. He helped defend Rochester Castle and fought at Lewes. In 1265, Warenne escaped to Pembroke, France. After a treaty between France and Scotland in 1295, Edward I invaded Scotland. John de Warenne helped defeat Scotland in the Battle of Dunbar, and was therefore named Keeper of the Realm, but in 1297 he was defeated by William Wallace.
