Bibliography

The first wife of King Edward I was Eleanor of Castile. They married in October 1254 when he was 15 and she was 11. She is sometimes called "The Faithful." She was born in 1244 in Castile, to Ferdinand III, who was the King of Castile and Leon in Spain. When she died, King Edward asked that a cross be erected every place that the funeral procession stopped, and candles burned at her tomb for over 300 years. In her lifetime, Eleanor had ten children, but most of them died at an early age. She died of natural causes in England on November 28, 1290.
