King Edward I of England was born on June 17, 1239. He was made the duke of Gascony in 1254 and Married Eleanor of Castille the same year. In 1264 Edward I fought for the king at the Battle of Lewes, and in 1265 he defeated Montfort at Evesham. He created a system of legislature that strengthened his control. As the eldest son of King Henry III he was named king after Henry III's death in 1272. The wars in Scotland and England dominated Edward's reign after 1294. Edward attacked France in 1297 but was stopped because of the rebellion in Scotland led by William Wallace. This caused him to return to England to help his army. The English nobility rebelled against the rules Edward had made to have more power of France and forced him to grant the Parliament control over taxes. At his death, Scotland had been only partially conquered.
