In March 1297, Andrew de Moray escaped from imprisonment. He had been a prisoner under King Edward I, and although he escaped his Uncle continued to be held at the Tower of London. He began a small army in Avoch and started a series of guerrilla raids against the English. One of his first successful attacks was at Urquhart where he killed many of the attackers, and the other Englishmen retreated. He continued to fight against the English and set up bases at the Avoch Castle and Balconie Castle. After many years of fighting, he forced English forces out of Inverness. This allowed him to recapture castles in the entire Northern region. After helping William Wallace defeat the English at Sterling Bridge, he was wounded and died three months later.
