Alexander III was born to Alexander II in 1241. He was crowned in 1249 at Scone, Scotland at the age of eight. When he was ten, he married Margaret who was the daughter of King Henry III of England. He was a strong leader and defeated King Haakon of Norway in 1263 at the Battle of Largs. Margaret died in 1275, and his sons' deaths in 1281 and 1284 left him without an heir to the throne. His granddaughter Margaret, became Queen at age three, but died at an early age, causing wars to keep Scotland's independence.
