South American Marsh Deer
- Scientific name: Blastocerus Dichotomus
- Life span: unknown
- Diet: The marsh deer is like other deers, but it prefers water lillys, grass, and other water grasses.
- Habitat: The Marshdeer is found in Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and used to be known in Uruguay. In these continent's they lived in the swampy areas, marshes, and standing water areas with a lot of grass.
- Description: The Marshdeer is the largest deer in south America with shoulders 1.0 to 1.2 meters high.The males can have as may as ten points and at least eight points.
Both males and females have a reddish brown coat with a dark brown coat during the winter. Their tails are bushy and have a reddish orange coloring. Their legs are black below the knee.
Their muzzle is black and they have a ring of white around their eyes and ears. They grow as long as 10 to 15 centimeters. Their hooves are large and black.
- Breeding: Breeding occurs during the months of October and November where a male has a herd of females. The fawns are born during the months of May and September.
The fawns are born in singles and its very rare to have twins. After the wet season they scatter and then form groups near the water during the dry season.
- Population and Status:
CRITICALLY ENDANGERED!!
There about only 116 marsh deer in Brazil and the reason is because of people hunting them and destroying their habitat.
- Reason for Rarity: The Marshdeer has been existing in Peru for many years, but now after decline of range, high levels of expulsion, and loss of habitat, it is EXTINCT in Peru. The South American Marshdeer still lives in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguy, and Uruguay.
