World War II

World War II began on Sept. 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland. Germany's dictator, Adolf Hitler, the leader of the Nazis, wanted to conquer territories they were stripped of in the peace treaty, The Peace of Paris, after World War I. The Treaty of Versailles also forced Germany to accept responsibility for causing W.W.I. Hitler would retaliate Germany's defeat in W.W.I. and proclaimed that the Germans were a "superior race". He promised to rid the country of Jews and Communists.

Japan and Italy also desired dictators so they joined Germany and invaded weak countries that could be taken over easily. Britain and the Soviet Union were standing up against Hitler. The U.S. became involved after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. These three countries along with China became allies in the war.

After a series of bloody battles Germany surrendered on May 7, 1945, and Japan on Sept. 2, 1945, after the U.S. dropped the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima and a larger bomb on Nagasaki.

The U.S and the Soviet Union became the world's most powerful nations.
