Revolutionary War

Bunker Hill

The Revolutionary War began in 1775 because American colonists were angry with the British. In the mid 1760's Americans had to pay a tax on tea, pay tax on stamps, and did not get to help write their own laws.

The Revolutionary War broke out soon afterwards. The American colonies didn't have a central government, so they started the Continental Congress (leaders from the colonies).

When it came time for the patriots to pick their general they picked George Washington who was a former leader in the French and Indian War.

The Declaration of Independence was written in which the colonies declared their independence from British rule.

The British force surrendered at Yorktown, Virginia, because France began to help the Americans win the war.

In 1783 Britain signed the Treaty of Paris, recognizing the independence of the United States. This led to the birth of a new nation.
