Crossing of the Delaware

The Crossing of the Delaware was a historic moment when General George Washington led the American revolutionary troops across the Delaware River in order to surprise the British in the Battle of Trenton. General Washington found out the next British attack would be a major one and would be in Philadelphia. General Charles Lee planned to attack the British from the rear with nearly 5,000 men. General George Washington knew that the only way was to retreat across the Delaware River. So on December 25, 1776, General Washington and 2,400 of his men had began crossing the river full of sheets of ice and fighting their way through sleet and a blinding snowstorm. Against all odds, Washington and his men made it. The bold and daring plan of General Washington reminded those who were there why they were there -- for freedom.
