Hello! My name is Eureka. I am a special kind of boat that can
travel on water and on land. I am also known as a Higgins Boat. I am an
amphibious vehicle, and I'm here to tell you about myself.

|
| The
Higgins Boat is named after Andrew Jackson Higgins who invented it. This
vehicle is important to our history, because it was used in World War II.
General Eisenhower said, "Andrew Higgins was the man who won the war
for us." |
| Andrew
Jackson Higgins wasn't always a boat maker; he began with a lumber business
in New Orleans, Louisiana where he lived. From 1923-1929, Higgins ran his
lumber business. He had a few boats that he used for carrying lumber out
of swamps. He also had a repair yard for his boats in the Industrial Canal
of New Orleans. But when the lumber business was in trouble, he decided
to concentrate on boats. He started designing small boats and formed Higgins
Lumber which
made motorboats. |
