Karen Brewer is a six-year-old girl who claims a witch lives next door to her dad's house. No one really believes her except her friend, Hannie. Karen always tries to spy on Mrs. Porter, the witch. Sometimes she gets caught and gets in trouble. One day when Karen's in bed she thinks she sees Mrs. Porter on a broomstick. She gets really scared. She spies on the witch the next day and hears Mrs. Porter say strange things about midnight and getting ready for something. Karen thinks Mrs. Porter is going to have a witch meeting at her house at midnight. Karen sets her alarm clock to go off at quarter to midnight. The alarm doesn't go off so Karen thinks that Mrs. Porter set a spell to keep it from going off. Karen sees some cars pull up near Mrs. Porter's house. Karen spies on Mrs. Porter and sees that the meeting was not at 12:00 at night, but 12:00 noon. |

Karen tells Hannie they should warn the neighborhood and become heroes. Karen thinks they can make up their own spell so that they can go into Mrs. Porter's house without Mrs. Porter casting a spell on them. They went to Mrs. Porter's herb garden to get some supplies for the spell and tried to make a spell. They came up with: Here are the witches. We'll give them a whack so they can't hurt us, and they'll never come back. Karen told Hannie they were just going to go to the meeting and tell the witches they knew what the witches were up to and they should leave the town alone.
