The Common Newt

Newts are very cool creatures. Here is a little bit of information about them.

Newts are part of the salamander family.  They look like salamanders too!  They grow to be less than 6 in. (15 cm.) long.  They hatch from their eggs under water.  Yes, the mothers lay eggs.  When they are born, the baby newts have gills and live under water for several months.  When the newts are grown up, some species stay and live the rest of their future in water. Other species live and lose their gills to live their future on land.  Newts hibernate under leaves in the winter.  Newts are vertebrates and are classified as Chordata.
