Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore was frail child and always sick.  He lifted weights, though, that helped.  He also liked to read and draw animals.  He loved to play with his brothers and sisters, too.  He had tons of pets, turtles, mice, and birds.

In college he met Alice Lee. This gorgeous woman liked him back.  They married on Teddy's birthday in 1880.  Later on he started law school and won a seat in the New York state law school.  Just when life was getting good, disaster struck.  On Valentines Day in 1884 his wife died after giving birth to Alice.  On the same day his mother died of typhoid fever.  He went to the west to take his mind off how much he missed his mother and wife. His baby was left with his sister.

Teddy was determined to help everyone. He made sure everyone had what they needed.  To help someone wasn't something he hated to do, he looked forward to it. That was part of the reason everybody loved 'America's Teddy'.    Every job Teddy ever had he did well along with many other things he did to help out.

Teddy was a hero in 1898 because of the Spanish-American  war.  The Spanish were ruling Cuba.  Everyone was mad at the Spanish.  Teddy's army fought and won Cuba its independence.

Later in 1898 Teddy ran for governor of New York and won.  That was when America proved that every one loved Teddy Roosevelt.  Every speech he gave was explaining what he would do to help someone or something.  Teddy won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906.

In 1900 Teddy was nominated to run for vice President and won, but not for long.  President McKinley was shot and killed.  Teddy was then America's youngest President at 42.

Teddy backed his friend William Howard Taft for President in 1908 and won.  He planned to retire and spend time with his family now.  When he came home he found Taft doing things he didn't like at all.  So he ran for President again in 1912, but lost to Woodrow Wilson.

World War I began in 1917.  Teddy tried to enlist in the army and was turned down because of age.  By 1918 Teddy was losing his good health.  His sons served for him.  Quentin, his son was killed in the war.  Teddy died on January 6, 1919.  America was sad.  We will always remember 'Americas' Teddy'.
