The White House

The White House is in Washington, D.C. It is the best known house in the country. The president and his family of the United States live there. George Washington was the 1st president of the United States but never lived in the White House. John Adams was the first president to actually live in the White House, but it was not complete. George Washington was in charge of the building of the White House.
It took the men eight years to build the White House. It is made out of bricks and stone. The White House gets many visitors a year. It does not cost any money to go in and visit. The president has big dinners and ceremonies.
The White House is a very big place. Inside there are a total of 132 rooms. Some rooms are named after their color. The red room has red walls and red furniture. There is also a green and a blue room. The biggest room in the White House is the east room. It is used for parties. There is also a room called the Oval Office. It is a private room that the president does a lot of his work in.
Special visitors stay in private rooms such as the Lincoln Bedroom. The furniture in in the bedroom belonged to Abraham Lincoln. He was the 16th president of the United States.

Soon after the White House was built, the United States went to war. The British soldiers set the White House on fire! It took three years to build it again. The White House has been standing for 200 years. Ever since the Civil War, the White House has been the biggest building in America. There have been a lot of changes, but it will always stand as a symbol for our country.
