Food Groups

 

 

            You should always have a balanced diet. To be sure you that you have a good diet you must know about the six food groups:

 

Bread

Fruit

Vegetable

Meats

Dairy

Sweets

 

 Bread

The first group is the bread, cereal, rice, and pasta group.  You must have 6-11 servings of this group.  This group is made from all grains. Oats, rice, corn, and wheat are all grains.  This group gives carbohydrates, fiber, minerals, and vitamin B and E for cell growth and healthy skin. 

           

Fruit

The next group is the fruit group. You must have about 2-4 servings of this group. It gives you minerals and vitamin C for repairing cells.  Vitamin C should be taken every day.  This group supplies energy from natural sugar. Also this group contains water and fiber, which is very good for you.

           

            Vegetables

Another food group is the vegetable group.  You should have about 3-5 servings of this group.  They are high in minerals, fiber, and vitamin K, E, C, B, and A. These vitamins are good for wound healing, repairing cells, healthy skin, and for growing healthy.  Vegetables usually have a small amount of fat. 

           

            Meats

The next group is the meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs, and nuts group.  An average amount is about 2-3 servings.  These foods are very high in protein and provide minerals and vitamin E, D, C, B, and A.  These vitamins are for healthy skin, growing healthy, blood clotting, and repairing cells.  This group helps your body grow strong and stay healthy.

           

            Dairy

Another group is the milk, yogurt, and cheese group.  An average amount of this group is 2-3 servings.  These foods contain calcium and minerals. This group is very high in protein. 

           

     Sweets

The last group is the fats, oils, and sweets group.  Many people believe that this group is not one of the six food groups.  You should eat these foods sparingly.  They are high in calories and have very little nutrients. You only need a little bit of this group to grow healthy.
