Food Groups
You should always have a balanced diet. To be sure
you that you have a good diet you must know about the six food groups:
The first group is
the bread, cereal, rice, and pasta group.
You must have 6-11 servings of this group. This group is made from all grains. Oats, rice, corn, and wheat
are all grains. This group gives
carbohydrates, fiber, minerals, and vitamin B and E for cell growth and healthy
skin.
The next group is
the fruit group. You must have about 2-4 servings of this group. It gives you
minerals and vitamin C for repairing cells.
Vitamin C should be taken every day.
This group supplies energy from natural sugar. Also this group contains
water and fiber, which is very good for you.
Vegetables
Another food group
is the vegetable group. You should have
about 3-5 servings of this group. They
are high in minerals, fiber, and vitamin K, E, C, B, and A. These vitamins are
good for wound healing, repairing cells, healthy skin, and for growing
healthy. Vegetables usually have a
small amount of fat.
Meats
The next group is
the meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs, and nuts group. An average amount is about 2-3
servings. These foods are very high in
protein and provide minerals and vitamin E, D, C, B, and A. These vitamins are for healthy skin, growing
healthy, blood clotting, and repairing cells.
This group helps your body grow strong and stay healthy.
Dairy
Another group is the
milk, yogurt, and cheese group. An
average amount of this group is 2-3 servings.
These foods contain calcium and minerals. This group is very high in protein.
Sweets
The last group is
the fats, oils, and sweets group. Many
people believe that this group is not one of the six food groups. You should eat these foods sparingly. They are high in calories and have very
little nutrients. You only need a little bit of this group to grow healthy.
