Eating Disorders

There are three main eating disorders: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Obesity.

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa comes from a Latin word meaning “nervous loss of appetite”.   Anorexia is when a girl or boy usually between the ages of 14 and 17 believes that they are fat when they are not.  The kids starve themselves hoping to become “thin” again.  If the starvation reaches a point where it becomes dangerous to the person they must be hospitalized and have psychotherapy to recover the disease.  85% of a child’s weight drops of they are anorexic.  There is no real cure for Anorexia because it is very hard to understand the cause.  This disease is more common for a girl than a boy.

Bulimia Nervosa

The next main eating disorder is Bulimia Nervosa.   Bulimia Nervosa is a mental disorder.  Bulimia is when a girl or boy (usually a girl) of their early-adult life believes that they are fat, like Anorexia, but unlike Anorexia a kid with Bulimia will eat a lot of food them throw it up.  You can tell if a person has Bulimia if they are constantly weighing themselves and are very concerned of their body size and weight.  Sadness and low self-esteem are symptoms of Bulimia.  Bulimia is sometimes fatal.

Obesity

The last main eating disorder is Obesity.  Obesity is an eating disorder where kids are overweight.  They usually become overweight by eating too many calories.   There is no real sickness from obesity, just becoming overweight.
