ADD/ADHD
The
main difference between ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is that one with ADD will be easily distracted,
but not necessarily hyper. But, kids with ADHD are easily distracted and very
hyper. Unlike most mental diseases, humans with ADD or ADHD are of standard or
above average intelligence.
The illness is ten times more common in boys than in
girls. It is also more easily detected in
boys, due to the nature of their behavior. Three to five percent of school age
children are affected with Attention Deficit Disorder. ADHD is one of the most
usual mental illnesses. It affects about 4.1 percent of children 9-17 years old
in a 6-month period.
The main indicators for ADHD are a short attention span,
highly energetic behavior, and unexpected actions or outbursts. One with ADD or
ADHD might experience the loss of sight, memory and/or communication skills.
When people with this illness are over stimulated they can even become vicious.
In many cases medications such as Ritalin is used to help
treat someone with ADD/ADHA. But, medication is not used to treat all with ADD.
Sometimes children in are given extra help in school or more time to complete
assignments. Also, some go to weekly therapy.
The cause of ADHD is unknown. ADD was formally thought to
increase with a high sugar diet, but this was proven to be false. There have
been many other hypothesizes but all were proven to be false.
