North America

North America is the third largest continet after Asia and Africa. It extends as far north as the Arctic Ocean and as far south as Central America. In addition to Canada, the United States, and Mexico, the North American continent also includes Greenland, Central America and the islands of the Caribbean Sea. Less than half a billion people live in North America and this accounts for about 8% of the total population of the Earth. Even though a realatively small number of people live in North America, it is a large contributor to the problems that threaten animals. Overconsumption in America alone is a key factor is rainforest destruction, the excess logging of forests and pollution from factories and automobiles. Much of the history of Europeans in North America is one of wanton slaughter. Bison and wolf poplulations were decimated. The attempts to eradicate prairie dogs has threatened other species, such as the black footed ferret, as well. According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, as of February 2003, 517 animal and 745 plant species were listed as threatened or endangered in the United States ALONE!
