Food in the Middle Ages

Breakfast If you were rich you might eat white bread with a cold meat and cheese. If you were poor, you would probably eat dark bread, like barley bread.

Spices were so valuable they were locked up. Fresh fruit was hard to get. Different kinds of birds were cooked--starlings, storks, even vultures. Everyone drank wine and ale and cider. Plain water was dangerous because it was dirty and might make you sick. |
| Your plate was made of bread. It was very bad manners to eat the plate. You would probably share a cup with other people. They used knives but not forks! | ![]() |

Sometimes when birds were served, like pheasants, the feathers were pushed back into them to make them look more lifelike. Wild boar might be served with an apple in its mouth. |
