In the year of 1912, the Titanic, the largest ship of its time, was on its first journey ever. Many people thought of it as a "dreamship." It was thought to be unsinkable.
But on one fatal April 14th night, it hit a humongous iceberg. The watchman was yelling,"Iceberg! Iceberg!" The captain though could not turn the ship in time. The ship later that evening sank in the northern atlantic ocean. Many women and children escaped on lifeboats , but most men were not so lucky.
Another ship named the Carpathia came and picked up 705 of an estimated 2,200 passengers .
But
the good that came out of this was that it made the S.O.S. a standard
distress signal and required all ships to carry a specific number of
life boats and life preservers.
