Hurricanes

hurricane-strong, twisting storm that starts over a large body of water (like an ocean)

Hurricanes start around the equator and goes toward the North or South Pole.

Hurricanes occur over the North Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico. If they occur in the Pacific Ocean they are called typhoons. If they occur on the Indian Ocean or around Australia they are called tropical cyclones.

The main part of the hurricane is the "eye." That has caused major damage. Here are a couple of hurricanes.

In the year of 1938, a hurricane called the New England Hurricane ripped through the northeastern U.S., killing approximately 600 people.

Hurricane Andrew struck horror in 1992 in Florida and Louisiana killing 54 people, but causing $22 billion worth of damage.
