A blizzard occurs when a cold air mass moves out of the Arctic into the Temperate Zone. Many blizzards follow a period of unusually warm weather in winter. Winds of 35 miles (56 kilometers) per one hour or more.
One of the worst blizzards was in the eastern U.S. in 1888, on March 11-14. It killed 400 people.
