Crafts Guilds In the early medieval times, some serfs made their homes near the castles in little towns. They  gave up farming and wanted to give away little articles. City life was not easy. Walls were built around city, housing was expensive. Soon they realized they can make money by selling the things they made. When their sons grew older they would become journeyman and fathers would teach them how to make things.
