Oil Pollution

Oil Pollution is a big problem in our world. It is very dangerous to animals to and humans. Animals get stuck in the sticky mess and suffocate and their fur gets all ruined. They die most of the time. This happens all over the world. The number of gallons of large oil spills yearly is 37 million gallons. Large oil spills result from tankers having collisions or crashing. There are a couple ways to clean up the spills.

Oil damages animal's fur and feathers. Their fur and feathers keep the animals warm and when oil gets on them it prevents the animals from staying warm and they freeze to death. Other things that hurt the animals are when they take in oil; it poisons them. It can also make the animals blind and can cause liver failure. It doesn’t only hurt animals but is very harmful to the coral reefs as well.

People have to clean up the excess oil from the collision or such so that animals are safe. They have to clean the beaches and every thing around the beaches. The process for cleaning this up is as follows. Biological oil agents break down the oil so it desinigrates faster. Then an oil boom help absorb the spilled oil. After that skimmers in the ocean skim the surface cleaning up oil. That takes a long time and a lot of work.To clean the beaches they take power hoses and spray the beach. This can be harmful to the beach and the animals.

Numbers of millions gallons of oil each source puts in the oceans worldwide each year:
Big spills: 37
Routine Maintenance:137
Down the Drain: 363
Up in smoke: 92
Off shore drilling: 15
Natural seeps: 62

Down the drain: Used car oil can end up in oceans. An average car oil change is 5 gallons. This can go into ocean by run-offs.
Routine maintenance: Every year cleaning ship operations release oil into clean water.
Up in smoke: Every year air pollution caused by cars and factories release hydrocarbons. When it rains these particles settle and it rains into the ocean.
Natural Seeps: Some ocean oil pollution is natural. Seeping from the ocean bottom and eroding sedimentary rocks releases oil.
Big Spills: Only 5 % of oil spills are caused by tankers but when it happens it is very bad.
Off shore drilling: Off shore drilling can cause oil pollution from spills.
OIL AND BIRDS
It ruins the birds waterproofing harming the bird. It soaks into the birds veins and cools them down to a low temperature. It tries to clean itself and inhales and digests the toxic oil damaging its liver, lungs, kidneys, intestines, and other organs.

The way oil spills happen is that tankers crash. So oil spills really hurts animals, plants, and our surroundings. Oil spills can be very dangerous to birds. A large amount of oil is wasted and ends up polluting our world. Oil ends up in the ocean, in rivers, and in the rain.
