Theodore Roosevelt was invited to go on a bear hunt around the town of Smedes, Mississippi. They had not yet found a bear for a few hours. Finally, they found one! The guide named Collier knocked the bear on the head with a club and then tied it to a tree.

When Roosevelt came to where they tied the bear, he was angry at what he saw. The bear was now bleeding. He refused to claim the bear for himself, and for anyone else to claim it either. Theodore felt sympathy for the bear and decided to kill it with a hunting knife to put it out of pain.

Reporters that saw this happen spread the news around the country. Clifford Berryman, who was a cartoonist made a cartoon of this event. Morris and Rose Michtom, who owned a toy store, saw the cartoon and Rose decided to create two stuffed bears. They wrote a letter to Roosevelt asking if they could use the name "Teddy's Bear" for new creation.

Today we still use the name Teddy Bear. The Teddy Bear is one of the most popular and loved stuffed animal in the country.
