In the election of 1904, Roosevelt was up against Mark Hanna of Ohio, who wanted to win the presidency in the 1903 Republican convention. Roosevelt beat Hanna, who died before the Republican National Convention. He then won again at the national convention.

The Democratic Party had nominated Alton B. Parker, a judge from New York. Roosevelt gained many votes to the armed forces, minority groups, many reformers, and major financers who trusted his belief in law and order. Roosevelt won with 336 electoral votes and Parker with 140 votes. Roosevelt's Vice President was Charles W. Fairbanks of Indiana.
