Sapphire is the hardest stone next to the diamond. People generally think of sapphire as blue, although they are also colorless, pink, orange, green, golden, yellow, purple, and black. Fancy, more expensive, sapphires are mainly other than blue. Valuable sapphires are called “ star sapphires” because they can reflect light in star like ways. Also found in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Australia, and Montana. The most valuable sapphires once came from Kashmir, India.
The deep blue “heavenly” sapphires were, and to some extents still are deemed: popes, bishops, and cardinals wore them since the middle ages. They are known as the jewels of chastity. An ancient East Asian myth claims the sky gets its color from a huge blue sapphire that holds up the Earth. The sapphire was also once thought to have strong medical powers.
