Appearance

The Allosaurus’ body is built like an ostrich, but its brain is like an alligator. The Allosaurus can weigh up to 3 tons. Its average weight is about 200 kg. Its mass is about 1 tonne-1.7 tons. Allosaurus was the biggest carnivore in its habitat, and in the late Jurassic period.

Allosaurus’ usual length is about 12 meters, but it can grow up to 13 meters in length. The length of its teeth were 5-10cm long. They were also curved backward so prey couldn’t escape. His teeth were also dagger-like with serrated edges. Allosaurus’ leg length was 1.38 meters. His stride length was 2.72 meters. His thighbone length was about 30 inches. Allosaurus’ average height was about 5 meters tall. The Allosaurus had small, red, brow horns over each eye. Allosaurus moved its tail from side to side because it was easier than moving up and down. His hind legs were powerful, sturdy, and bent back most of the time. Its dinosaur group is called theropod. Allosaurus had a S-shaped neck. He had a strong neck and back that aided its jaws in tearing flesh. Allosaurus had short, but powerful arms for a carnivore, but long hook like claws on each end of each arm.  This was important for holding on to and attacking prey.  Its feet were large, one of its four toes pointed towards its tail giving it better stability.  Allosaurus had a big head and a hollow nerve chord ending in its brain.

Habitat - Allosaurus

Allosaurus lived in Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Australia and Tanzania.  Skeletons were found in these locations.  The most complete Allosaurus skeleton was found in Wyoming.  Allosaurus was the most common carnivorous dinosaur in Jurassic North America. Allosaurus is known primarily from the Morrison formation. Allosaurus lived about 150-153 million years ago in the late Jurassic.

How it Lived - Allosaurus

Allosaurus was a carnivorous lizard hipped dinosaur.  He ate dinosaurs like Stegosaurus, Diplodocus, Iguanodonts and Camarosaurus.  They were all sauropods.  He also ate many other herbivores.  Sometime, if a meat eater died he would eat it.  However, he usually would not try to attack carnivores if they were alive and healthy because he would not have an advantage in the fight.  Most of the time Allosaurus would not hunt in groups but sometimes it would have to when the prey was too large to attack by itself.  Allosaurus’ main rival was the slightly smaller Ceratosaurus.  Allosaurus sometimes would scavenge on other dinosaurs’ kills.  Allosaurus’ intelligence was high among the dinosaurs.  Allosaurus ran fast however this was a danger to them because if they fell their short arms would not break their fall and they would be badly injured.  Allosaurus lived in the late Jurassic Period.

Like many of the carnivores, the Allosaurus’ jaws expanded up and wide.  This helped him swallow large chunks of food.  Despite the similarity to other carnivores, Allosaurus’ name means “different lizard” because of its strange vertebrae.
