Cajun Traditions

The cajun culture is a culture like any other culture. They have their own food, traditions, superstitions and heritage. They even have their own language.

Here are some of their superstitions and traditions.

Superstitions

The Cajuns have superstitions for all sorts of purposes. They have some medical superstitions such as:

  • If you cut a potato in half and rub the juice on a wart and you throw it over your shoulder not looking where it fell it is sure to get rid of the wart
  • If a pregnant woman is sad about seeing a person with a type of handicap, her child would be born with the same exact handicap

Some superstitions have to with a cross which goes back to their strong religious beliefs. Such as:

  • To make sure someone will never come back to your home - as they leave throw salt in the form of a cross.
  • To break up a tornado into pieces, make a cross nine times with 2 knives

Traditions

The cajuns also had a lot of traditions. Some tradition had to deal with food.

  • "The traditional Christmas dinner" is Gumbo.
  • Since it is wrong to throw food, those who dropped food should bless it before they eat it.
  • A remdy for sprains is to wrap the sprain in raw onions and leavit that way for a couple of days.

Although they have been proven false over the years people still believe in them.
