The Cajun Language

Welcome to all you need to know about the Cajun language. In Louisiana there are three different types of french. There are creoles, negres and Cajun. Creole is spoken by French descendents that came directly from France. Nigre is spoken mostly by African Americans. It is samular to Creole but not completely the same. When there was slavery the masters and mistresses would teach there slaves ceole language. It was hard for them to learn and they couldn't pronounce some of the words. Thus forming Negre. Let me give you an example: moi, toi, tu, il, venir, courir was how you really pronouced them and the African American French pronounced them mo, to, te, li, vini, couri.

Cajun is a mixture of French, Spanish, English and Indian. Bayou came from the Indian word bayok meaning "little creek". Most of cajun came from French and Indian but there is some Spanish and English mixed in. Cajun French is very different from regular French. So if somebody went to France speaking Cajun they would have no earthly clue what you were talking about. Now here are some animals in Cajun French.

  • Cocodrie
  • Ours blanc
  • Loup de prairie
  • Crabe
  • Ecrevisse
