Lakes

Staircase lakes are lakes that are stacked together on a mountainside. They are formed either when a glacier erodes the mountainside as ot moves down the mountain or when it leaves behind enough deposit material to form a dam. The dam stops water from flowing out and forms a lake.

The rock inside a mountain is not always the same. Some rock is harder than others and wears away easily. The areas where the lakes are had softer rock than the land around them. That's why the lakes are in those places.
