An arete formation is a sharp ridge of rock that resists erosion by a glacier. They are formed when two cirque glaciers come together, but they don't actually meet to form one glacier. Sharp parallel ridges are formed between the two cirque glaciers that wear small valleys on both sides of the ridge.
