Fragments of volcanic materials of any size that escapes a volcano during an eruption is called tephra. Tephra forms into clouds that spreads up during an eruption and spreads over hundreds of miles ata first, but the clouds of tephra can spread around the entire world. Tephra falls down and lands on the land below. Some piles of tephra are a hundred feet thick or more. It can bury an entire city if enough is thrown out of a volcano during an eruption.
