A lahar is a mixture of rapidly flowing rock debris and water that comes from the slopes of volcanoes. They are also known as mud flows and debris flows. They form by the rapid melting of snow and by pyroclastic flows, hard rainfall on loose rock deposits, breakout of a lake dammed by volcanic rock deposits, and by debris avalanches.
