USGS image After an eruption the gases have to settle somewhere. When large amounts of carbon dioxide gas enters the soil when it rains, it sinks into the soil. This poisons the trees and can kill entire forests.

Eruption clouds have steam (water) and sulfur dioxide gas .These gases spread across the sky and can kill people, animals, and plants. When it rains, the rainwater picks up the gases and forms acid rain. Acid rain can kill crops, poison water supplies, and corrode metals. USGS image
