This
caldera volcano was formed 3,400 years ago.
It is called the Aniakchak Caldera |
| Calderas
form at the top of a volcanic mountain. They are very big and have
a circular shape. The top of the volcano blows off during an eruption
from shallow magma chambers. When too much
magma is lost from inside the volcano at one time a huge empty cavern
forms under the top. The top of the volcano collapses into the open
area because it weighs too much. You can see that smaller eruptions
have happened because there are small crater-like formations. A Caldera
is not a like a crater except in its shape. |
