| The stone monument called
the Great Sphinx, has a lion's body, and a man's head. It stands
about 20 meters high, close to the pyramids of Giza. The carved sphinx
was made about 4,500 years ago.
Many people have seen statues, but not quite as
many have seen one where you could have eight different men stand on its
feet. Well guess what, it's no fantasy, there really is a statue
that big. It is a great giant statue of King Ramses II, which stands
out-side two large temples, carved into a cliff. The cliff goes by
the Nile River in Egypt. these cliffs are called Abu Simbel, (ab-BOO-simn-bell),
which was built by King Ramses II many hundreds of years ago.
A brand
new, high dam, is being built on (Acrobb) or the Nile River. The
bigger (higher) the dam is, the bigger (higher) the water rises behind
it. in fact, once the dam is through, the dam water will have risen
the river water high enough to flood the cliff temples. And, Bloop-glub-bloomph,
which would be the end of Abu Simbel, and the rest of the giant statues.
But
Egypt, the United States, and other countries part of the United Nations
are giving money to help save the Ancient monuments. The toughly,
hard job of trying to move the monuments and temples has just begun.
Each of the statues will be cut into many large blocks. Each of the
large blocks will be numbered and lifted to the tops of the cliffs.
The numbers will then help the workers on how to put the large blocks back
together. Once this is done, the statues and temples will then be
saved from the Nile Flood.
