Ancient Egypt was ruled by pharaohs, or kings.  They believed in the spirit of the Hawk God, whose name was Horus.  He entered into a new pharaoh, and made him a god, too.  They also believed in the after-life.  The pharaohs were buried with their possessions that they wanted to take with them there.

 Ancient Egypt has a history that covers a period of over 3000 years. If you put this in perspective- 
most present day countries count their histories in groups of hundreds of years at a time. Only modern 
China can come anywhere near this in terms of history continuity. 
 

        The Egyptian culture ceased to exist almost 2000 years ago. The last things that were left behind 
disappeared in AD 391 when the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I closed all began temples throughout 
the Roman Empire. 

        It was not until Napoleon's invasion of Egypt in 1798 that the wonderful artifacts of Egypt were found 
in Europe and then their ancient culture began to awake from its slumber.
