The first candy was used by the Ancient Egyptians to worship their gods/goddesses. Licorice and ginger are the two oldest types of candy. In the early 19th century candy making began. U.S. started making candy in the mid 19th century. In 1911 the first chocolate bar was sold in a ballpark. 1960-candy making made up almost half the U.S. Cavemen first invented Candy. The birth of chocolate began in 1492, when America was discovered.
During the Spanish Civil War, the plain M&M's were made. Mr. Mass invented them. During World War 2 the M&M's were sold to the public (1941). They were used in the military because they were great to carry around in a tube and in any climate. They originally were sold in tubes, but know they are sold in pouches. In 1954 the Peanut M&M's were made. Then in 1960 peanut chocolate M&M's introduced the colors red, yellow and green. In 1972 the M&M characters were discovered. Then short after that the Orange M&M was introduced in 1976. Finally last but not least, the purple M&M was chosen in 2002.
In 1880 the popular Halloween candy, Candy Corn was invented. The Wunderle Candy Company of Philadelphia was the first company to put Candy corn on commercials. They were originally sold in bulk containers. They were pack in wooden buckets, cartons and tubs. About, 8.3 billion Candy Corn are made in a year. Invented in the 1860's, by the brother of the NECCO founder, Candy Hearts were unleashed to the Valentines Day world. Every Valentines Day new sayings are in the boxes. They first made in factories in 1902. The classic saying " Kiss me", " Sweet Talk", and " Be Mine" were around for the longest time out of all of them.
Pez been around for 50 years, first marketed in Vienna, Australia. Over three billion Pez are made annually in the U.S. alone. They are made in 60 different countries. Pez are made in Orange, Connecticut by Pez Candy Inc. the Atomic Fireball was created by Nello Ferrara in 1954. They are very spicy and using the hot-panned candy process created them. An estimate shows that people eat 15 million Fireballs in one week.
After Columbus discovered America, he brought back cocoa beans back to the Spanish King and Queen. The Aztec Indians used the cocoa beans to make chocolate drinks known as "chocolati", which is a warm liquid. The Aztec Indian Emperor would drink 50 glasses of "chocolati" in a day. The Aztec chocolate was very bitter, so the Spanish sweetened it with cane sugar. When it was brought back to Spain, they made some changes and while making the changes they invented cinnamon and vanilla.
Rock Candy was discovered in the 18th century. It was first used as a medicine. Rock Candy had many names like Rock Candy, and Sugar Cane. Candy has a long history and will only get longer.
