Chocolate comes from Northwestern, South America. The cocoa in chocolate is from cocoa beans. Chocolate is known as the "food of the gods." The Maya and the Gulf Coast Olmacs are the first known people to try chocolate. They never added sugar so it was bitter. Historians are still trying to figure out how cacao beans got up north. By the end of the first millennium B.C. cacao beans were moving up the globe. The first type of chocolate made was dark chocolate. The type of bean used is unknown. The "Food of the gods" is really the food of the gods.About 100 years later a French man put sugar into the chocolate, it tasted great! The French man then started selling the new chocolate. It was a big success! Still today, all around the world people eat chocolate. The history may seem small, but it is true!
