PODIATRY

The following information will be phrases that are incorrect about the foot.

"It can't be broken, because I can move it." You can walk with many fractures. Some examples are: breaks of the thinner of the two leg bones; small chip; fracture of either foot or ankle injuries.

"If you have a foot or ankle injury, soak it in hot water." Do not use hot water if you suspect there is a fracture, sprain, or dislocation. Heat causes blood flow which makes swelling, and pain greater. Ice will stop blood from flowing, and will reduce pain, or swelling.

"The terms 'fracture,' 'break,' and 'crack' are all different." All of these words are proper in describing a broken bone.

This information will tell you what to do before seeing a podiatrist.

1. Take a break or rest, get off your foot.

2. Apply ice gently to your foot.

3. Make sure to elevate your foot higher then your waist.
